Scrimshaw Workshop with Hedge and Cave
An Introduction to the Art of Engraving on Bone

⏰ 10.30 am - 1.30pm

📍 The Mount Without, the Gallery (access by stairs)

Join us for a hands-on introduction to Scrimshaw. A traditional engraving technique once used by sailors to etch intricate stories into bone, antler, ivory and mother of pearl. In this three-hour workshop at Get Stoned, Bristol, you’ll explore the roots of this fascinating heritage craft and create your own unique engraved pendant.

Led by Guy Dugmore of Hedge and Cave, a skilled hand-tool artisan with over 20 years of experience working with bone and antler.

During the session, you’ll be guided through the process of transforming a bone blank into a beautifully engraved pendant. Guy will introduce you to the tools, techniques, and history behind Scrimshaw — helping you to craft a one-of-a-kind piece and gain the confidence to continue developing your skills at home.

About Guy Dugmore

Guy Dugmore is a hand-tool artisan and founder of Hedge and Cave, with over two decades of experience crafting with bone and antler. His journey began through experimenting with Stone Age tools and prehistoric crafts, which led to a deep fascination with traditional materials and techniques. He went on to teach at a land-based craft college, working alongside a wide range of traditional makers.

Around ten years ago, Guy began focusing on the decorative arts of bone, developing his practice into a professional craft business. His work draws inspiration from ancient myths, folk tales, and prehistoric symbolism, using engraving, carving, and pyrography to tell visual stories through natural materials.

While he’s dabbled in Scrimshaw for many years, it’s only in more recent years that this intricate engraving technique has taken centre stage in his creative practice. Through Hedge and Cave, Guy continues to share and evolve these age-old skills, crafting beautiful, meaningful objects by hand.
