A specialist reference on quartz, covering its properties, varieties, and uses. Formerly part of the KIAD library, it remains a solid study copy for gem enthusiasts.
BUTTERWORTHS GEM BOOKS cover all the principal gem minerals, with each book in the series dealing with a single species and employing a standard format for the presentation of facts and information. Many gemmologists and gem dealers tend to specialize in two or three gemstones, and information on a particular gem species has, in the past, had to be extracted from books covering the whole field of gemmology. BUTTERWORTHS GEM BOOKS allow the dealer or collector to purchase only the information he requires, in a well-organized and common format.
Quartz, the best-known and probably the commonest gem and ornamental mineral, is described here in the first book to be devoted solely to it. The origin and chemistry of the mineral, the history of the names given to it and its physical properties are described with a view to introducing the gemmologist, mineralogist and student to the mineral with the widest variety of colours and forms.
A section is devoted to the hydrothermal growth of quartz and another deals with the most important localities world-wide. Quartz takes on many unusual and beautiful crystal forms, and the most interesting are described and illustrated.
