The technique of jewelry making need not be so difficult - nor need the raw materials of the craft be so expensive - as the layman generally assumes. John Crawford

here shows that striking jewelry can be made with limited materials and tools at slight ex-pense, and that the process is well suited to the craft activities of schools and col-leges, just as it may be rewardingly pursued by creative amateurs. Mr Crawford is concerned with basic materials and tools, and simple methods of working, and with the kind of jewelry which they can produce: a Celtic brooch, an etched ring, a wire bracelet, a soldered pendant, etc. As well as the traditional materials, Mr Crawford shows that other materials such as seeds, wood, ivory, bone, shells and semi-precious stones - can also be used, particularly in classes for young people. The illustrations prove that the jewelry produced by students and amateurs can be more personal, and very often more beautiful, than the costly commercial products.

John Crawford was trained at Edinburgh College of Art, and is now a lecturer in Craft at Moray College of Education, Edinburgh.
