From collecting and polishing stones (the subject of Herbert Scarfe's first, and remarkably successful, book many amateur lapidaries wish to extend their skills to the next stage of cutting and setting. It is for such enthusiasts that Mr Scarfe has prepared this new book.
Here Herbert Scarfe explains the technical processes of stone cutting and polishing, and at the same time relates particular stone shapes to the methods of jewelry-mounting most appropriate for each.
Successive stages in the development of traditional settings are described and illustrated, always with the underlying purpose of marrying the qualities of any given stone to the setting where it will be displayed to greatest advantage.
Individual sections of the book are on:
- Gemstone Material; the preparation of Gemstone Rough; Cutting and Setting Cabochons; Polishing Flat Sections;
- Faceted Stones and their Settings;
- Tumbled Stones and Baroque Jewelry;
- Natural Crystals in Jewelry Design; and Jewelry Tools and Materials.
For all amateur jewelry makers, whether at home or at school, this is the best possible guide to the cutting and setting of stones.
Herbert Scarfe is Head of the Art Department of a Senior High School at Kingston upon Hull, where lapidary is well established as a school craft and as a leisure activity. He is well-known as a lecturer and tutor in lapidary at summer schools and educational centres, and has been responsible for introducing the craft to teachers in many parts of Great Britain.
